heart - negative space

i decided to do portraits of women together with hearts in their negative space.

the stars are because i have been feeling starry recently. i'm not sure why it's taken over as a staple in my personal symbols...

I really like these ATCs.

What's the difference between watercolours on gesso vs. watercolours on watercolour paper? Is the former more liquidy and surfacey than the latter? I'm curious.

there are a couple of differences. with gesso, it doesn't soak in as fast. you can stain lightly, or go heaviy, scratch it off, or wipe it up almost completely.

if you wet the surface before you apply color, it's much more fluid and liquidy than with plain paper. i try to gesso everything.

however, if you want to be sure to obliterate the gesso brush strokes, you will need to do a few layers and lightly sand. i like the brush strokes, myself. sometimes the watercolor gets caught in them and runs. mmmm. yum!

plus you can gesso anything from manilla folder to bricks. => always a plus!
